The second reading for this Sunday is titled The Love Passage since it is most often read at weddings. It
makes sense for couples to want this passage read at the occasion of the wedding because it calls us to an ideal of love that we hope is present in our relationships with our life partners.
However, when Paul wrote these words, he was not speaking of romantic or marital love. Paul was writing to the Christians in Corinth who were struggling with conflict and division related to a number of issues. Paul was calling the Christians in Corinth to live in a “more excellent way”.
