LIFE SHIFT - The First Reading for today presents us with the story of the Valley of Dry Bones. When God called Ezekiel, who had already been trained as a priest, to take up the mantle of prophet, he was living in exile in Babylon. They are in a devasting time. This time of exile was one of the most difficult and challenging times for the Israelites in large part because they found themselves without those things that gave them an identity as the people of God. Land, monarchy, and temple: these three things gave identity to Israel and now it was all gone. They found themselves on different land, under a ruler of another nation, and without the ability to worship as they were accustomed to worshipping.
