LENTEN JOURNEY - Beckoning God, It’s that time of year again, when you call us to the wilderness, and if we’re honest, we’d really rather not go.
Actually, for many of us, it feels like we never left.
The wilderness is full of twists and turns, struggle and unknowns.
So, if it’s OK with you, we’d rather stay here, even if it’s not exactly comfortable or life- giving.
Right now, staying right here sounds way better than the wilderness.

WHY ASHES? - From the early days of our faith, Christians have observed the remembrance of Christ’s passion and resurrection with great reverence. It became the custom to prepare for that observance by a season of prayer and fasting, and the reconciliation of those who had been separated from the community of faith.
By keeping the season of Lent, we take to heart God's call to repentance and the assurance of forgiveness proclaimed in the Gospel, and practice in our daily lives the work of reconciliation.

THE POWER OF THE PAUSE - In the gospel for today Jesus reminds us of the importance of rest. In this passage, we find Jesus to be extremely busy. We can assume that the events in this story happen at the end of the Sabbath day. It seems that Jesus heals and works until late into the night. Eventually, he heads out to find a quiet place to pray. Even Jesus needs time alone with God to rest and replenish himself. This is not new to us. We know that Jesus takes time to pray with God on several occasions during his ministry. Next, we read that the disciples try to coax Jesus into coming back to heal more people. It is significant to me here that Jesus does not heal every person who is in need. It seems there would not have been time for him to do that and to continue his work of proclaiming his message.
